Our Commitment to Youth
At Bandera Electric, commitment to our members is a top priority, and as a Cooperative, we are guided by the Seven Cooperative Principles, which includes Education, Training and Information. We seek to provide education and training for our members ... especially our young members. That is why we award scholarships to high school and college students each year, as well as send two students on the Government-in-Action Youth Tour to Washington D.C. If you know a student who might qualify for these programs, encourage them to apply.
Bandera Electric is committed to the leaders of tomorrow, and we encourage members and their children to work hard and follow their dreams. We offer scholarships to local high school and home-schooled graduating seniors, and college students. BEC scholarships may be applied toward tuition, fees and expenses at any accredited four-year university or college, junior college, or TEA-approved technical or trade school that offers an associate degree.
Each year, Bandera Electric awards ten $2,500 scholarships. Recipients of the scholarships will be chosen based on the following:
- Financial necessity
- Written essay
- Participation in community/school activities
- Parent(s)or legal guardians must be members of Bandera Electric Cooperative or receive BEC service at their residence and provide written verification from the member-owner of the account.
- Graduating high school seniors must have maintained at least an 80 percent on a 100 percent scale.
- Students currently enrolled in post-secondary educational course work must have maintained a minimum cumulative 2.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale at an accredited four-year university/college, junior college, or TEA-approved trade school.
- Applicants must meet general admittance requirements of the accredited four-year university/college, junior college or
- TEA-approved trade school to which they apply to receive funds.
- Applicants may only win once.
The scholarship program was established in 1998 by Bandera Electric Cooperative to encourage and assist in the educational pursuits of its members and their immediate families. Since then, we have awarded $175,000 in scholarships!
Winners are chosen by the New Braunfels Area Community Foundation (NBACF). The NBACF will field all applicants, filter those applicants based on criteria set up by BEC, and administer and monitor all scholarship grants through an anonymous process.

2018 Scholarship Application
In June, BEC sends deserving students on an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C as part of the Electric Cooperative Government-in-Action Youth Tour. Students will spend an entire week in Washington, D.C. experiencing all the capital has to offer. While in D.C., the students have the opportunity to visit many of the nation’s exciting museums, memorable landmarks and meet other students from around Texas and the United States.
The contest and trip are part of the National Electric Cooperative Government-in-Action Youth Tour hosted each year by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Electric cooperatives from across the country sponsor students from their respective service territories to attend this exciting event each year.
The Youth Tour was first suggested by President Lyndon B. Johnson while he was a Texas senator. His vision to send "youngsters to the national capital where they can actually see what the flag stands for and represents" came to fruition in 1965. Bandera Electric sent its first Youth Tour participant in 1972 and we have sent students each year since 1985.
This year students may submit an essay or video answering a predetermined prompt.
Applications are due by Wednesday, January 17, 2018.
Applications are closed. Winners will be notified.
BEC Solar is pleased to announce an exciting new opportunity for schools located inside the BEC service territory. BEC Solar will be holding a video contest for public or private schools that offer K-12 classes, to compete for a chance to win a 5 kW BEC Solar system, this includes installation and setup.
This contest may benefit a school district in many ways including creating educational opportunities such as promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), reducing monthly electric bill, and helping the environment.
BEC Solar plans to install the 5 kW system during the 2018 summer break of the chosen school.
The video should not exceed two-minutes (120 seconds). Limit one entry per school campus. Students and educators are encouraged to participate in their school's video entry. Contest entries must include the Power Your School Entry Form with video submission. Please see the official Rules and Guidelines for more information.
To submit a video entry, schools may email the video or zipped file, upload to a Dropbox and email the link, or send a YouTube link to the video to PublicRelations@BanderaElectric.com
Video entries that are too large to send electronically may be mailed on a flash drive to:
