Astronomical Spectacle in the Hill Country: Two Rare Eclipses to Grace the Skies

The Hill Country, a picturesque Texan gem, is about to be at the center of celestial phenomena that most people only dream of witnessing in their own backyard. In the coming months, residents and visitors alike will have the chance to experience not one but two extraordinary astronomical events that promise to leave them in awe.

Annular Eclipse - October 14, 2023 Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 14, 2023, when an Annular Eclipse, colloquially known as a "Ring of Fire" Eclipse, will grace the skies over all of Bandera County. This rare event occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, creating a mesmerizing ring-like appearance. It's a celestial ballet that few are fortunate enough to witness firsthand.

Great North American Eclipse - April 8, 2024 If one eclipse wasn't enough, the Hill Country will play host to an even more spectacular event less than six months later. On Monday, April 8, 2024, the entire area will find itself in the path of totality for the Great North American Eclipse. This is a momentous occasion as most areas in the Hill Country will be plunged into darkness for over four minutes, allowing for a unique and prolonged celestial spectacle.

To ensure the safety and enjoyment of our community during these celestial events, Bandera Electric Cooperative is taking proactive steps. BEC is offering eclipse glasses to its members at their offices while supplies last, with a limit of up to 8 glasses per account. The primary concern is the safety of BEC's membership, and these glasses will enable members to view the eclipses without any risk to their eyesight.
* Additonal eclipse glasses have been ordered and offices will be restocked by Thursday, October 5. Please call ahead and confirm the office has eclipse glasses.

BEC has also prepared informative guide for its members,"Eclipse Guide for BEC Members." This guide contains valuable information on how to safely experience the eclipses and make the most of this rare opportunity.

As the dates of these celestial marvels approach, Bandera County is gearing up for an astronomical adventure like no other. Whether you're a seasoned stargazer or a novice skywatcher, these eclipses are bound to leave a lasting impression on all who are fortunate enough to witness them from the heart of Texas' Hill Country. Don't miss this chance to be a part of something truly extraordinary in the skies over the Hill Country.
