Follow these rules of thumb for efficient washer and dryer use.
- Modern detergents work well in cold water, and many loads come out just as clean.
- Wash full loads and select the right water level. For lightly soiled items, choose a quick or eco cycle.
- Use high-spin settings to remove more water and shorten drying time.
- Consider using detergent sheets that come in a decomposable box to reduce the amount of packaging compared to liquid detergents in thick plastic bottles.
- If your washing machine is a front-loading or high-efficiency model, be sure to select detergent labeled for HE machines. These detergents disperse quickly and produce low suds.
- Dryer balls help separate clothing in the dryer so warm air circulates better. If you can, air dry clothes on a clothes line or clothes drying rack.
- Clean the lint trap every cycle and check the vent hose for buildup. A clogged vent extends dryer run time and raises fire risk.
- Time laundry for midday, when the home may already be warmer and when overall demand for electricity is lower.
