In 2022, the electric load on the ERCOT grid passed the 80,000 MW threshold for the first time. In 2023, that threshold was passed 14 times. In 2024 it was passed 49 times.
This illustrates the accelerating growth that we are seeing here in Texas. ERCOT stands for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas and is responsible for operating the bulk transmission system and overseeing the wholesale energy market. This energy market is the only real-time energy market operating in North America, meaning that the price of electricity varies based on when you buy it. Typically, this means the price drops in the early morning hours when there is more supply than demand. Likewise, it holds true that on a hot summer evening as the sun goes down prices go much higher. This free-market approach is beneficial in keeping energy costs down if there is adequate supply to meet the demand and is structured to promote competitive pricing.
Unfortunately, when demand exceeds supply, or even the expectation of demand exceeds supply, the price of electricity goes up.
To accommodate this energy market volatility, electric utilities use the Purchase Power Cost Adjustment mechanism to minimize the impact on electricity users.
In anticipation of data centers, which enable artificial intelligence, and continued growth of electrification, the wholesale prices of electricity are rising. Artificial intelligence consumes 10 times the amount of energy that a normal Google search engine uses.
Hence, BEC will start seeing the impact of the rising wholesale energy prices on their electric bills later this month. We estimate that the average PPCA cost increase will be about $12 per month. Please understand this is not an electric rate increase, but an adjustment made based on market conditions.
In response BEC has many options to help you save money on your electric bill. The easiest way to save is to sign up for Time-Based Usage, which will typically save you about 10% on your electric bill. We also offer our Energy Saver Program which provides on-bill financing for energy improvements well below market rates, which lowers members’ overall energy use. Finally, we have a Smart Battery and Thermostat Program which will provide not only cost savings, but a reliable back-up power source for your home should an outage occur.
While the costs for most things are rising, BEC can help you understand what is driving your energy costs. By simply being energy aware you can save money and minimize the financial impact of rising wholesale energy prices.
