There are plenty of fun activities during the summer, but nothing beats those hot summer days spent at the library. It’s a free activity that all of our members can enjoy. Step out of the heat and into the cool library where adventure awaits around every corner.
Local libraries across the Bandera Electric Cooperative (BEC) service area are buzzing with excitement as they prepare for another season of fun and learning through their annual reading programs. Thanks to a generous $6,250 donation from BEC—split evenly between five libraries—children and families throughout the community will have access to enriching activities designed to spark imagination and enhance literacy.
Each of the participating libraries—Medina Community Library, Lakehills Area Library, Bandera Kronkosky Public Library, Comfort Public Library, and Real County Public Library—received $1,250 to support their summer reading initiatives. These programs, free for all participants, offer children, grandchildren, and young family members the perfect opportunity to keep their reading skills sharp while school is out.
At Medina Community Library, Director Alison Harbour said the program’s “TEXAS ADVENTURES” theme offers children new experiences. “When they read about Texas animals, the rodeo, the Alamo, and insects, they’ll already have a great background and will understand what they are reading.” With an engaging theme like this, kids can dive into stories that bring Texas history and nature to life, enhancing their learning through hands-on activities and creative storytelling.
Meanwhile, Lakehills Area Library aims to make learning fun and accessible. “It’s free family entertainment that combines learning with fun,” said Library Director Dianna Landes. “Every week, children can come in, learn something new, and have a great time.” Parents in the community appreciate having a reliable resource where children can continue their education throughout the summer while having fun with their peers.
Bandera Kronkosky Public Library is equally committed to keeping young readers engaged. Director Paul A. Phelan highlighted the program’s importance. “Summer reading helps children maintain and even improve their reading skills while developing a lifelong love of reading. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body!” Phelan’s words ring true as countless studies show the value of reading during school breaks to prevent learning loss.
Creativity takes center stage at Comfort Public Library this year. “We invite you to embark on a journey of art and creativity, celebrating how art enriches our lives,” said Programs Coordinator Mary Anne Johnson. Through various artistic expressions, children are encouraged to expand their horizons and discover the beauty of storytelling through different mediums.
