Historic flooding once again impacted the Texas Hill Country on July 15, bringing together communities and organizations to aid in recovery and relief efforts throughout the area. Bandera Electric Cooperative and the BEC Foundation were quick to respond to these efforts, as much of the service territory felt the impact of the flooding.
A $10,000 donation - $5,000 from BEC along with a matching $5,000 amount from the BEC Foundation - was gifted as emergency funds to Hill Country Family Services (HCFS), a local non-profit that connects other area non-profits, school districts and first responders to create a connected and supportive network to assist families in crisis.
In response to the flood, HCFS began providing emergency housing assistance to displaced families. Due to many of these families being located within their electric service territory, BEC and the BEC Foundation knew these funds would directly impact BEC members in need.
“Hill Country Family Services provides compassionate care for families in crisis, and we can respond so quickly because of organizations like Bandera Electric Cooperative and the BEC Foundation,” said Bryce Boddie, executive director.
This is just the first step in monitoring community needs as recovery efforts continue and evolve. BEC’s commitment to service is embodied by one of the seven principles that guide the cooperative—Concern for the Community. Cooperatives such as BEC serve and meet the needs of members by working closely with local organizations and strengthening sustainable development within the communities they serve.
