Mrs. O'Leary's cow may have gotten a bad rap, but the folktale reminds us fire safety is an important part of farm life. People, animals and property are in danger when fire breaks out on the farm. Inspect your barn and outbuildings for fire hazards using this checklist.
- Place heat lamps and space heaters at least 3 feet from anything flammable.
- Keep heaters and other hot equipment on a sturdy surface where they can’t fall over.
- Make sure electrical equipment is labeled for agricultural or commercial use.
- Check that wiring is free from damage and extension cords are not being used in the barn.
- Protect light bulbs with covers that shield them from dust and moisture and prevent breakage.
- Identify any damage quickly and complete repairs with safety in mind.
- Regularly remove dust and cobwebs around electrical equipment, out.lets and lights.
- Store oily rags in a closed, metal container away from heat.
- Maintain the barn as a smoke-free zone.
- Clearly mark exits, and keep pathways clear.
- Train workers to use fire extinguishers.
- Make sure everyone knows personal safety is the first priority if a fire breaks out.
