Staker FAQs

Why is there paint in my yard?

Because…. Anyone planning excavation in the public ROW must contact Texas811 a minimum of two working days before work can begin.  Utilities have 48 hours to locate underground facilities.  ***Private utilities (facilities from the metering device, demarc, etc, to the home or business) must be protected by the owner, and it’s the owner’s responsibility to cover costs associated with the protection.

Color-coded paint markings or flags are used to indicate where utilities are buried:

  • White - proposed
  • Pink - temporary survey markings
  • Blue - potable drinking water
  • Yellow - gas, steam, or flammable liquid
  • Green - sewer or drain lines
  • Purple - reclaimed or irrigation water
  • Red - electric
  • Orange - communications

(reference:  https://texas811.org/)

Stakers will often use white paint or flags to show a proposed underground route for fiber.  Electric will use labelled red stakes to indicate proposed pole and equipment placement.

When will someone contact me once I fill out the application?

Once the application is processed and it’s determined the home or business is in a BEC Fiber serviceable area, an Design Services Engineer will reach out to coordinate a site survey to determine the construction necessary for connectivity to the home.

How long does a fiber installation typically take?

Homes that require trenching or aerial messenger strand construction may require 10-15 business days for completion, while simple aerial or underground with existing conduit pathways can usually be completed within 7 business days.

Will tree trimming be required before installation?

If tree limbs or other vegetation is growing into the power space causing a potential hazard, or density prevents the reliable installation of aerial communications cabling, tree trimming or vegetation management may be required before installation can occur.

Why is 100% fiber connectivity recommended inside my home or business?

For the best member experience, we prefer 100% fiber connectivity from the NID (network interface device) to the modem / router located inside the home or business. While this presents some challenges to our installation team, the quality and future scalability of fiber are worth the additional effort.

Can I extend my fiber connection to a guest house?

We can help by assessing what it will take to get connectivity in both locations. Sometimes it may require a second fiber service. Other times we can utilize vacant conduit from building to building (under 320ft). Or use a piece of equipment to help boost the existing signal. Every situation has its challenges, best to call your BEC professional!

New Home Construction

When should I contact BEC if I’m building a new home?

Call BEC early if your home is under construction. We’ll talk you through the process for a cleaner installation. We have the ability to save you money in the long run by pre-wiring your house with Fiber, providing you with information to assure your builder saves on unnecessary low voltage wire runs. Even in some cases provide conduit if a ditch is already being dug.

Do your new home plans have a communications room?

If they do, then discuss with your builder about having a conduit placed from the exterior of the home to the communications room or attic for fiber internal wiring. You may also contact BEC early in the process and we can pre-wire your new home to keep from having unnecessary wires on the outside of the exterior walls.
