Whether at home or at work, no one likes it when electrical devices or equipment fails because of power surges. At home, that could mean temporarily going without comforts such as TV or air conditioning, and at work, the downtime can result in decreased productivity.

Surges are brief overvoltage spikes or disturbances of power that can damage, degrade or destroy electronic equipment within any home or building, according to Electrical Safety Foundation International.

Installing surge protection devices in your home or building can prevent equipment failure and interruptions to work when surges happen after lightning strikes, or if there’s faulty wiring, damage to power lines or electrical load switches. Electrical surge damage can be from a single event or the buildup of power surges.

Surge protection devices are available for the whole home. For workplaces, applications of surge protection devices include heating and air conditioning systems, generators, security systems and cameras, and fire alarm signaling circuits.
