Electric pressure cookers have gained popularity as a fast and efficient way of cooking. Newer models have features that make them safer than the old-fashioned ones that work on the stovetop. Components like backup vents, expanding rubber gaskets, locking lids, pressure regulators and more help prevent accidents.

But they still pose some safety hazards—such as burns or electric shock—if not used correctly or if safety features fail. In some rare cases, the cooker can eject hot food and liquid. Some manufacturers have issued recalls of their electric pressure cookers because of faulty components, fire hazards and electric shock risk.
To help avoid danger, remember these tips.

Read the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation, and follow recipes from reputable sources to ensure accurate cooking procedures.

Teach children to stay clear of your electric pressure cooker. Keep pets away, too.

Avoid the steam when releasing pressure because hot steam can cause serious burns. Wear protective mitts when handling the release valve.

Replace the sealing ring when necessary. The gasket should be cleaned and inspected regularly to ensure it properly seals the lid onto the pot.

Use enough liquid in the cooker. Lack of liquid can cause food to burn or result in insufficient pressure.

Avoid overfilling the pressure cooker. Allow space for foods that expand while cooking to ensure they don’t surpass the capacity of your cooker.

Do not submerge the electrical components in water. Most cookers have an extractable liner that can be cleaned separately from the powered parts. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for keeping your cooker clean.

Beware of recipes for deep-fried foods prepared in the electric pressure cooker. Pressure-frying requires special equipment.

Although it’s important to keep a safe distance from your electric pressure cooker, stay close enough to monitor the progress of cooking and safety.
