Wind Demonstration Project

With the installation of a wind turbine at the Bandera office, BEC members can view actual production of one popular renewable system.
Just visit our Bandera office!
What is it?
A 45 foot tall 2.4kW wind turbine.

Where is it?
The system is located in front of the Bandera business center.

How much did it cost?
Approximately $19,000*. Wind energy is free, but the technology used to harness it is not. Federal tax credits are available for the installation of some systems. *This cost is as of December 2011, when the system was installed. As technology continues to improve for these systems, they will likely become more affordable.*

Why?
A
s an additional education piece for Members who need help deciding if such a system is feasible for their home or business.

Since installation, this system has been producing a little over 2 kilowatt-hours of electricity (or about 16 cents worth) daily.

Details:
The system does not have battery backup, which means when the wind isn't blowing this system will not power anything. All electricity it produces is put back on the grid.

Wind turbines convert wind into electricity. This is done when the turbine blades capture the kinetic energy in wind and begin to rotate.  When they move, the blades spin a shaft that leads from the hub of the rotor to a generator.  The generator turns this rotational energy into electricity.

Renewable systems generate electricity without directly producing any greenhouse gas emissions so they are an attractive option for members who want to make a “green” choice.

If you decide to install a solar PV system or wind turbine that is grid-tied, it is important you let the cooperative know. Visit our "Installing Renewables" page for more information.
