Solar Demonstration Project

Solar PV Demonstration Project

With the installation of solar panels at the Bandera office, BEC members can view actual production of one popular renewable system.
Just click here!

What is it?
A 2.4kW photovoltaic system - more commonly known as solar panels.

Where is it?
The system is located in front of the Bandera business center.

How much did it cost?
Approximately $19,000*.  Solar energy is free, but the technology used to harness it is not.  Federal tax credits are available for the installation of some systems.  *This cost is as of August 2010, when the system was installed.  As technology continues to improve for these systems, they will likely become more affordable.*

Why?
A
s an additional education piece for Members who need help deciding if such a system is feasible for their home or business.

Details:
The system does not have battery backup, which means when the sun isn't shining this system will not power anything.  All electricity it produces during the day is put back on the grid.

Solar systems convert sunlight into electricity. This is done when photons (which make up the sunlight) pass through the solar panel and agitate electrons found in the material of the photovoltaic cell. These agitated electrons are routed into current. Wire then conducts this current to batteries or the electrical system, depending on how the solar system is set up.

They generate electricity without producing any greenhouse gas emissions so they are an attractive option for members who want to make a “green” choice. Solar energy also happens to be the most abundant resource on the planet.

If you decide to install a solar PV system or wind turbine that is grid-tied, it is important you let the cooperative know.  Visit our "Installing Renewables" page for more information.
