BEC To Build New Main Office Building (artist concept of new building below) Bandera Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BEC) announced today that it will be constructing a new corporate office behind its current building. Construction on the new 26,500 square-foot facility will begin immediately. The new building will provide BEC members with a number of enhancements such as a drive-up payment window, a community meeting room, improved overall business efficiency and a building several feet above any floods in recorded history. “The old BEC building is out of space, inefficient and is located within the 100-year flood plain. We considered a number of alternatives and we see this new facility as the best option,” said Jerry N. Word, Sr., BEC Board President. “We want to be sure our members are getting the best value from their Cooperative; this building will improve our business efficiency and provide the ability to operate during extensive floods.” “It’s not a question of whether we will be flooded again, it’s a question of when,” said Bobby Waid, CEO and General Manager. “Our present office has been flooded twice, and if we expanded we would be spending our member-owner’s money on something that will ultimately be damaged by floods. In addition, we have cramped work areas, only one storage closet, and various departments have been moved to several buildings on the property because of the lack of room in the main office.” BEC’s current office was inundated by five-foot deep floodwaters in August 1978 and again suffered over $200,000 in damage during the flood of July 2002. The floor of the new building will be approximately twelve-feet above the floor of the current facilities, which places it several feet above the 100-year flood plain. BEC’s current office was originally built in the 1940’s with several additions over the years and will be razed once the new facility is finished. A majority of the work will be completed by Huser Construction Company, Inc. at a cost of $3.183 million. BEC will be responsible for coordinating contractors to complete the remainder of the project at an estimated cost of $1.055 million, for a total estimated project cost of $4.238 million. BEC’s financial forecasts indicate that its current rates should not be impacted by the cost of construction.
